OpenAI has just unveiled one of its most exciting updates yet — Group Chats in ChatGPT. What was once a personal AI assistant is now becoming a collaborative hub where multiple people can interact with the same AI in real time.

The feature is currently rolling out as a pilot program for logged-in users across all plans — Free, Go, Plus, and Pro — on both mobile and web. For now, it’s available only in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, but a global rollout is expected soon based on strong user interest.

Why Group Chats Matter

Group Chats are designed to make teamwork smoother and everyday planning easier. Instead of juggling separate conversations, people can now collaborate with ChatGPT together in one shared space.

Smarter Project Collaboration

Teams can create a single chat to:

  • Brainstorm ideas
  • Draft documents or presentations
  • Manage research and planning
ChatGPT acts like a shared assistant that everyone can access instantly.

Travel, Events & Personal Planning

Planning a trip or event? Add your family or friends and let ChatGPT:

  • Compare destinations
  • Create itineraries
  • Build packing lists
Everything stays organized in one conversation.

Home & Creative Projects

Whether it’s decorating a home, planning a garden, or choosing products, multiple people can share ideas while ChatGPT keeps track and helps visualize options.

Settle Opinions with Data

Having a fun argument? Tag ChatGPT to act as a neutral judge with facts and logic.

How It Works: Smarter AI + Strong Privacy

OpenAI has built this feature with both intelligence and safety in mind.

Smarter Social AI

Group chats run on GPT-5.1 Auto, which automatically selects the best model for any task. All features remain available — web search, image generation, file uploads, and more.

What’s new is ChatGPT’s ability to follow a group conversation naturally:

  • It replies only when needed
  • It can be directly mentioned using “ChatGPT”
  • It reacts to messages with emojis
  • It can generate fun images using members’ profile photos

This makes the AI feel more interactive and aware of the group dynamic.

Privacy & Safety First

OpenAI has implemented strong safeguards:

  • No shared memory: Your personal ChatGPT memory is not used in group chats. Group chats also don’t add anything to your private memory.
  • Invite-only system: Groups can have up to 20 participants, and each person must accept the invitation to join.
  • Full control: Members can leave anytime, and group creators can remove participants.
  • Extra protection for minors: If anyone under 18 is in the group, content filtration increases automatically.

How to Start a Group Chat

Getting started takes less than 10 seconds:

  1. Open any new or existing chat.
  2. Tap the people icon on the top right.
  3. Add participants directly or share an invite link.
(If you add people to an existing chat, ChatGPT creates a copy so your original thread stays unchanged.)

When you join your first group chat, you’ll be asked to set up a profile (name, username, photo). All your group chats then appear in a dedicated sidebar section for easy access.

A Glimpse Into the Future

OpenAI says this is just the beginning. Group Chats mark the first step toward a more social, shared, and collaborative AI experience. Instead of using ChatGPT alone, users can now work together with AI as part of the team.

At IndTechWorld, we believe this feature could change how people plan, learn, and create — from office workflows to family planning to content creation.
